Wuhan Art Museum: Contemporary Aesthetics in a Classical Bank

Designed in 1930 by the renowned architect Zhuang Jun, this European Classical Revival building once housed Jincheng Bank and is now home to the Wuhan Art Museum. Its domed atrium rises more than ten metres high, flooded with natural light from above. 

Nearly a century on, the building has undergone a magnificent transformation: from bank vault to art museum, and from financial documents to ink paintings. Here, a century-old carved staircase meets avant-garde exhibitions, bringing history and the future together in the galleries and casting an enduring beacon of beauty over the Hankou Historic District.
